Spent the morning with a camera crew from Equestrian Life, filming a piece on American Saddlebreds and Hackney (ponies) in sport. Should be fun to watch!

Started out the day with Training single horse for the Gayla crew. Varoom and sterling win cones, only double clear. Training cones champion. Second place training single horse. Did I mention it was the course from hell?
DeDe had two balls down and time penalties, dropping from first to third. Remember where the cones course originated. DeDe drove very forward, galloping in long open spaces. Ponies were super. Well done!

New FEI single horse for TEAM STERLING

Wendy Ying, DVM has agreed to allow TEAM STERLING to add Duke, her 11 yo Sport Cob to the competitive stable. Duke and Wendy were the USEF 2008 Reserve National Single Horse Combined Driving Champion. Since then, Duke has been in Wendy's FEI four in hand. Duke, who's registered name is CS Duke of Earl, has already begun training with me again, and I look forward to bringing him out later this year. Duke and I showed early in his career as a pair with his brother, Dante.

Gayla Bluegrass CDE - TEAM STERLING Pony four-in-hand debut!

Had to make a change of plans to get through the show. Guzzi, my number one steady wheeler had to have eye surgery Friday. Velocette, who has not been much in the team, and is just beginning to understand life outside the roadster ring, had to step up to the plate. I had to juggle things around, and she had never done hazards at all before, but we go through the weekend without mishap thanks to Katie James, Leonard Courtemanche, and Carrie Ostrowski. Right leader is Montesa, left is Ducati II, right wheeler is Velocette, and left wheel is Penton.

Bad news

Moto Guzzi, my super pony, is fighting and eye abcess. 50/50 right now. Treating 6-8 times a day. He's out for the show for sure, and hopefully we can save the eye!

Sterling Graburn Saturday Night Fantasia Equine Affaire 2011

The final show! What a blast! Anyone who has not seen the Fantasia show at Equine Affaire, you're missing out! EA staffers put a ton of work into the show, and it really does show in the quality of the acts and the clockwork precision it goes off. Hat off to them!

The Saturday night performance at Equine Affaire. And a good time was had by all!

Montesa (Jessie), Ducati (Darby), Penton (Petey) Moto Guzzi (Guzzi

This is about the third time Jessie has been in the team. The new harness came today, so mostly this is it. Traces are long, and I need to steal the trace carriers from the synthetic harness for the leaders. Bridles fit ok, and everything else works with minor tweaks. Looks pretty good on them I think. Not sure about this wagonette. Pulls easy, but maybe a tad too big. Everything works, and that's a plus! Love this team, and the mare will be great when she is ready. Poor Petey is just too worried about doing his job, he has a hard time relaxing.

Monday, March 14, 2011

Had a great driving day today. Worked ten today, and one lesson. All positive results. I love my ponies! I drove Velo and Jessie together for the first time today. They've each been paired with everyone else, and both been in the lead of the team, but I had not put the together yet. It took Velo a few minutes to soften and give to the bit but she really worked nicely once she got it! Jessie is a trooper and just does his job and clocks along like he wasn't a roadster pony his whole life.

Third time out with the team, second time for Montesa

This is the second time Jessie, aka Montesa has been in the team. He is the right (off) leader. What a little super star. He was a roadster pony until I bought him last fall.

talk about the weather

I guess I shouldn't have spoken so soon! Snow on the ground this morning! Gotta love that big beautiful indoor!

A rainy day in Georgetown

Might get outside this afternoon, but its cool and wet out today. All were good this morning, although the little gray horse was a little rushy, and the bay wanted to jig. I think both are strength issues, but time will tell. Y'all have fun with your equines today!

TEAM STERLING Pony four in hand

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riBORwMx4zM
This was a the first time out of the box for the ponies, last year pre-WEG. Eagle, the right leader, is now retired to the life of a pleasure pony in FL, and Jessie and Velo have joined the team. As soon as we get good weather, I'll get some video of the new ones up. Look for us at Equine Affaire in Colombus OH in the Pfizer Fantasia show.

Thursday, February 24, 2011

We made it to sunny Florida late Tuesday night, all safe and sound. Everyone worked well yesterday and there was a fair amount of interest in the new horse from those who saw him. First Vet inspection at 8:00 and dressage at 13:15. DeDe does dressage tomorrow!

lazy day

Well, not totally, since I got up and went to Wally World to get items to take on the FL trip, washed the truck (so naturally it's raining now) and doing little non-barn projects. It's too bad days off aren't longer, I could get more done!

Bigger picture of Quincey...

This was taken by Bob Branam Photography at the Live Oak CAI. Quincey was a Hanoverian X Lipizzaner, bred, born and registered in Belgium.

Zambo

I had a fantastic drive with Zambo yesterday! Outside in the big wind, still stayed happy and light. Looking forward to seeing what we can do in FL!

American Saddlebred Horse Association

Debbie Bandfield and I are off this morning to give a talk about combined driving to the ASHA this morning! Should be a nice chance to spread the sport to a group mostly unaware of it! Above is the American Saddlebred gelding, former Five Gaited Champion, Singsation, owned by Darryl Leifheit of Lexington.

Beautiful day in KY!

It's warm and the layers are coming off fast! Clipped Zambo in preperation for his trip to
FL. Got confirmation yesterday that I have a new sponsor! So proud to be sponsored by LIFEFORCE, an Equine nutritional supplement made by Alltech! Two more to clip before we go, and everybody is working really well and it should be a good show! My previous working student/assistant trainer Lindsey Nevitt will be joining us for the trip, and then Chamilla Lewis will be meeting us in FL. Of course, Dr. Ying will be around to add support and veterinary assistance too!

Warm today, already up to 45! Everyone gets to drive outside today!

Todays driving with video from yesterday

Great day with clients and horses/ponies!
Zambo got to do a stress day and was fabulous! P and  R's recovered really well! He's liking the new four-ring french link too! Looking good! Video from yesterdays indoor dressage session. Still a little tense at times, but he got better, and then we went outside, and he maintained!

Warmer weather!

It's supposed to be warmer today, maybe even mid 50's! Actually got to drive outside yesterday, even though it was a windy 40 something. I need the warm weather to get the show critters bathed and clipped again!

First Blog

Hello Friends,
Not much to say today. In one week, I will be heading south to Florida for my first show of the season. It will also be the first show as a single horse for Lorna Minz's horse, Zambo. Previously, Zambo has competed in pleasure driving as a single, and in pair and tandem, and he competed in an advanced four-in-hand with Wendy Ying last year. Gayla client Dede Delaney will also be heading south with me to make her debut in the prelim pony pair division. More to come!
